Our Mission Statement
The mission of The Chenango SPCA is to provide and
promote care, compassion and respect for
our animals and our community.



Founded in 1907, Chenango SPCA (CSPCA) is a nationally recognized, open-admission animal shelter that provides care for lost and homeless pets, adopts pets to new homes, and educates families and the community about the needs of companion animals. CSPCA serves primarily the residents and animals of Chenango County and the surrounding communities.

Provides shelter, care and compassion for over 1,500 stray, lost, surrendered and abandoned animals every year
Adopts homeless pets to new families
Helps families find the right pet for their lifestyle so that all animals find their forever home
Offers a wish book for families to register to find that “perfect match”
Reunites lost pets with their worried owners
Offers compassionate euthanasia and cremation
Provides education, training and outreach to our community
Offers educational topics such as responsible pet ownership and the needs of companion animals, safety around animals, spaying/neutering, dog obedience, behavior problem solving, cruelty and neglect, emergency preparedness, and more
Collaborates with organizations and local officials on community services such as cruelty investigations and emergency response and rescue
Offers rescue assistance for injured and lost animals during disasters locally, and nationally
Offers a Tree of Life memorial wall with engraved leaves to commemorate beloved pets
Has professional, knowledgeable and experienced staff
Offers volunteer opportunities for students and adults
Has a networking relationship with shelters throughout New York State
Is recognized by national animal welfare organizations such as Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) which provides information resources, training and program support.

The CCSPCA filed its Certificate of Incorporation on March 9, 1907 by nine directors:

1907 - Chenango County Humane Society receives incorporation papers on March 11 for the prevention of cruelty to both children and animals.

1957- Purchased land on River Road to house shelter (former site at 5557 County Road 32, Norwich)

1960 - CCSPCA receives a new 1961 animal ambulance through anonymous donor from California.

1980's - Roz Scheurman begins her 18 year tenure at the CCSPCA. Her accomplishments during her time are considered numerous including physical plant improvements such as two additions to house cats and dogs, humane education in the schools, policy development and securing community support.

1985 - Anna S. Judd Cat Addition (12x26 foot extension)

1986 - Dedication of The Gene Ireland Educational Center

1991 - Junior Volunteer Program started

1991 - New Kennel Addition to old shelter located at 5557 County Road 32 at Polkville Hill Rd Eviction Notice by State; marks new era on Nov 6 with new location at 6160 County Road 32, Norwich.

2004 - Dorothy L. Evans Nature Trail & Pet Memorial Wall created

2005 - First year of fundraising event: Valentine Fur Ball

2005 - CCSPCA hires new Executive Director, Carol J. Hedlund

2006 - CCSPCA holds strategic planning session in April

2006 - Hedlund assists ASPCA in rescuing animals from local flood

2007 - New education center, The Mary Elizabeth Macksey Humane Center
